Australian
researchers say a three-decade study of kidney transplant recipients
suggests that a "poor outcome" is likely for those unfortunate
enough to develop colorectal cancer.
The researchers
said that of the 9 kidney transplant recipients treated at the
Queen Elizabeth Hospital in South Australia between 1967 and 2000,
"all were dead within 9 months of presentation from their
disease."
"Immunosuppression
and late diagnosis are implicated in this poor outcome,"
the researchers reported in the journal Colorectal Disease.
"This
study highlights the poor outcome of patients who have had renal
transplant and develop colorectal cancer," the researchers
concluded.
