University
of North Carolina researchers report that regular use of nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) appears to substantially reduce
the incidence of colon cancer.
The researchers
reported in the journal Gastroenterology on their study of 226
patients with colorectal cancer and 493 cancer-free controls.
Participants
in the study who were the most regular users of NSAIDs were "substantially
less likely to have" colorectal cancer compared with occasional
or nonusers, the researchers reported.
"Our
observations suggest that NSAID use [is] . . . associated with
a lower prevalence" of cancers, the researchers concluded.
