The state
of North Dakota has become the latest to consider legislation
that would require that health insurance cover colonoscopy exams
to screen for colorectal cancer.
Rep. Sally
Sanvig of Fargo introduced the legislation that would require
coverage of screenings for all individuals who have a family history
of colon cancer, and all individuals over the age of 50.
House Speaker
Janet Wentz of Minot, who is undergoing treatment for colon cancer,
testified on the bill and observed that "the medical system
is set up to treat, rather than diagnose patients early."
A lobbyist
for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota testified in opposition
to the bill, contending that it would encourage unnecessary exams.
