Montreal Expos, Baseball Players Mount Colorectal Cancer Awareness Event

Britt Reames and Eric Davis took the lead in mounting an Awareness Day event calling attention to the importance of colorectal cancer screenings prior to a Montreal Expos game with the Toronto Bluejays in Montreal, Quebec.

Fans at Olympic Stadium learned about colon cancer and the importance of early detection during Score for Screening 2001, a national awareness campaign sponsored by Eric Davis of the San Francisco Giants, who successfully won a battle against the disease.

Britt Reames joined representatives from St. Mary's Hospital, an American Cancer Society affiliate, and a local physician on the field during a pre-game celebration to honor local cancer survivors.

Materials on colon cancer distributed to fans included Eric Davis baseball cards with colon cancer information. Britt Reames donated an autographed jersey for a raffle for fans taking the risk assessment test.

"Nobody should die from colon cancer," said Davis. "My focus is to touch and educate as many people as I can, hopefully get them screened and focused enough that if something is there it can be detected."

Davis, founder of the Eric Davis Foundation that benefits colon cancer research and pediatric oncology, has become a national spokesperson for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Other Major League Baseball teams participating in Score for Screening include: The Anaheim Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Oakland A's, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Florida Marlins, Houston Astros, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
