Study: Cyrosurgery May Aid in Treating Metastasized Colorectal Cancer

Cryosurgery alone or with liver resection may be effective in removing tumors in patients whose colorectal cancer has metastasized to the liver, according to researchers at the University Medical Center Nijmegen in Holland.

Cryosurgery involves the use of extremely cold probes to destroy cancerous tissues.

Researchers have found that with metastatic cancer confined to the liver, resection may offer the best chance of a cure but in many patients, it may be hard to resect all tumor tissue adequately.

Researchers used cryosurgery alone in 7 patients or in combination with resection in 23 patients, and concluded that local removal techniques can be used as an effective addition to liver resection to eliminate tumors.
