"Real-Time Processing" Said to Mark Major Virtual Colonoscopy Advance

A California medical imaging company said it has completed development of "fully real-time processing" for CT colongraphy that will enable a doctor to perform an immediate review of the colon less than one minute after the scan is completed.

Computed tomographic (CT) colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is an emerging tool that researchers say is highly sensitive in detecting clinically important colorectal polyps and cancer.

Teracon Inc. said that with its new "real-time, auto-navigating fly-through technology, the physician can be reviewing a patient's exam in fully real-time, interactive 3D, even while the patient is getting dressed.

"We believe this truly represents the breakthrough that the medical community has been waiting for, with regard to CT Colon imaging," said Robert Taylor, executive vice president of TeraRecon Inc.
